I'm not even sure why I know this, but this one's actually Ivy King. It was the second test in Operation Ivy, undertaken in case the Teller-Ulam...thing (you can't really properly call it a bomb) set up on Elugelab for the Mike shot didn't go off. King was actually a deployable oralloy fission bomb with a 100 kt yield.
This explosion was called "King". It was droped in 1952 which yielded 500 Kilotons. Awefully big for a weapon at the time considering that this explosion was about 40 times more powerful than anything ever droped during WWII.
I'm a huge nuclear fan but not insane. As destructive as nulcear weapons are. I find old photographs and films of these explosions quite beautiful to look at.
Sadly, even after the end of the 'cold war' these weapons are still a serious threat to our world.
no comments and no favs? damn, dont know what to say. i really like this one. browsing through loads of stuff and it jumped out. i think the colour edit really suits it, suits to the drama, small explosion in the centre but large scale after effects spreading throughout. going in my book anyway, nice one
